Snow, rain and UV radiation can be very hard on wooden garden furniture. So here is a guide on how to repaint and refresh wooden garden furniture. With wooden garden furniture, the paint will flake off over time
Wood is a classic that has always remained current. It is still a very popular material for garden furniture, which is due to the rustic style (see N24 article The Trends in Garden Furniture). Wooden furniture also blends in very harmoniously with the nature of the garden and can score particularly well when it comes to durability and quality. Also not to be neglected is the environmental compatibility of wood, which can practically be 100% recycled after its disposal.
Tropical woods are very tough
There are trees in many latitudes of the globe, and as different as the climate zones that characterize these trees are, so is the wood of different quality for furniture making. When it comes to the weather resistance and elasticity of domestic woods, they often have a disadvantage compared to tropical woods. Because tropical woods in particular have an advantage here thanks to their surroundings.
Two examples of exotic quality woods that are very suitable as garden furniture material are:
This wood comes from the Southeast Asian rattan palm, which is particularly noticeable in the forests there because of its long, stem-like growth. It is extremely flexible and tough, and has been highly valued by the whole world since colonial times as the perfect braiding material and support material for outdoor furniture (for example, available from gartenmoebel-express.de).
Teak also comes from a tree that can be found in South Asian climes. The quality of the teak is due to its naturally high impregnation with resin, which gives the wood a similar smoothness to domestic woods that have just been oiled. This is particularly advantageous for garden furniture.
Wood needs a lot of maintenance
As much as wood exudes an aura of tradition and cosiness, the main disadvantage is the regular need for maintenance. Wooden furniture can rot in the damp or be decomposed by UV light. Therefore, it is mandatory that you inspect your wooden garden furniture for damage every garden season.
It is often the paint that flakes off after a few years. If this is the case with your garden furniture, then do not buy new ones, but simply repaint them. It's not that difficult either. Just follow the instructions below.
Instructions for repainting wooden garden furniture
Step 1 - remove old paint layer:
First of all, you have to free your garden furniture from the old layer of varnish so that the repaint does not become irregular. It is best to use a wire brush first.
Once this is done, you will need to use a spatula and scrape off the last remaining paint.
Step 2 - roughen the surface:
In order for the new paint layer to hold well, you now have to roughen the wooden surface with sandpaper. After sanding, it is important that you remove any sanding dust from the surface. It is best to use a duster or a microfiber cloth.
Never wipe the surface with a damp cloth, as the moisture will penetrate into the wood, which means that the primer will not hold properly afterwards.
Step 3 - priming wooden garden furniture:
Now you can prime your wooden garden furniture. Make sure that you always use the brush to paint in the same direction. So you get a beautiful smooth surface afterwards.
Then let the primer dry overnight. It is best to place the garden furniture indoors. This way you can be sure that your neighbour's cat will not make yourself comfortable on the furniture at night and ruin the paint.
Step 4 - repaint wooden garden furniture:
If the primer is nice and dry, you can then apply the colored paint of your choice with a paint brush or glaze brush. Again, you should pay attention to an even application of paint in one direction.
Then let everything dry well, put the wooden furniture back in the garden, and enjoy the new look.
